North Shore touts tomatoes

Haleiwa Farmers’ Market celebrates the season of the vine-ripened tomato with a festival on Sunday.

Visitors can get hands-on with a recipe contest (extra points if you use local) and a tomato taste-off featuring home-grown fare. North Shore Farm/Big Wave Tomatoes will have their own tasting booth to introduce various heirlooms, and local farmers will present a wide variety of the fruit for sale.

Chef Hector Morales of Leonardo’s at the Turtle Bay Resort will offer samples, and vendors will sell such dishes as Green Tomato Pie with locally made French vanilla ice cream, Fried Green Tomatoes, Virgin Mary Popsicles and crepes made of tomato, basil and cheese.

The event runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kamehameha Highway/Leong
