Empty duplex damaged in blaze

A fire caused $250,000 in damage Sunday morning to an abandoned Pearl City duplex that is under foreclosure, Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Robert Main said.

The fire on Luehu Street was reported at 7:59 a.m., and firefighters were on the scene five minutes later, Main said.

They had the blaze under control in 10 minutes, Main said.

The duplex is abandoned and no one was injured, Main said. The duplex had no contents, he said.

Pickup driver badly hurt in crash

A 22-year-old man was in critical condition Sunday morning after crashing his pickup truck into a concrete freeway support pillar under the H-1 viaduct at 4:45 a.m., police said.

The accident happened in the Ewa-bound lanes of Kamehameha Highway just before Valkenburgh Street. Police said speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash in the median between Kamehameha and Nimitz highways.

A city ambulance crew was behind the 1981 Ford pickup truck and was first at the scene, an Emergency Medical Service supervisor said.

The man was not wearing a seat belt and suffered head and chest injuries, police said.

Man arrested in assault on TheBus

A 63-year-old man who was riding TheBus Saturday in Kalihi was arrested after allegedly harassing a 14-year-old female passenger, trying to punch the driver and assaulting fellow passengers who tried to intervene, police said.

The man was arrested for investigation of interfering with the operator of a public transit vehicle, third-degree assault and two counts of harassment following the 3:45 p.m. incident, police said.

A 25-year-old male passenger and a 25-year-old female passenger were allegedly assaulted and pushed by the suspect when they came to the aid of the 14-year-old girl who allegedly was being harassed by the suspect, police said.

The suspect then allegedly tried to punch the 40-year-old bus driver, police said.
