Man indicted in mo-ped fatality on the Big Island

A Hawaii County grand Jury indicted a 41-year-old Hilo man for allegedly hitting a mo-ped last month while driving drunk, killing the driver and then fleeing the scene after dragging him for about a mile.

Keolaokalani Kailianu was indicted June 13 on charges of manslaughter, neglient homicide and leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence after he allegedly hit Theodore Braxton May 28.

His trial is set for the week of Oct. 3 in Hilo.before Circuit Judge Glenn Hara.

Shortly after the accident at Kinaoole and Hualalai streets Kailianu was charged with first-degree negligent homicide, manslaughter drunken driving and fleeing the scene of an accident.

Braxton was killed  when Kailianu made a left turn into the path of his mo-ped on Kinoole Street in Hilo. The van’s driver dragged the mo-ped back to his home about a mile away.

Braxton, 22, was born in Chicago and attended UH-Hilo for the past three years, where he majored in performing arts and double-minored in agriculture and philosophy. He was supposed to graduate in 2012.
