Management plan devised for North Shore wildlife refuge

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a new plan for managing the James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge on Oahu’s North Shore over the next 15 years. 

The Fish and Wildlife Service said Wednesday it will host a public meeting on the plan at the Kahuku Community Center on July 14 beginning at 5 p.m.. 

The agency says refuge staff will be available to answer questions, discuss management alternatives, and take comments from the public at the meeting. The plan is available online at the agency’s website.

The refuge was established in 1976 to provide habitat for Hawaii’s four endangered waterbirds, the aeo or Hawaiian stilt, the alae keokeo or Hawaiian coot, alae ula  or Hawaiian moorhen, and koloa maoli  or Hawaiian duck.
