Models go for the grinds after show at Wolfgang’s
HAWAII fashion designer Andy South, 24, of "Project Runway" fame, sporting a full head of white hair, was a guest at Wolfgang’s Steakhouse fashion show brunch June 25. Former Miss Hawaii Olena Rubin Heu of KHON-TV was also in the house taking in the "Edgy fashions for Acid Dolls." The Acid Dolls store is in the Royal Hawaiian Center. Designer Cindy King and her sister, Wendy King, who handles marketing duties for Acid Dolls, were thrilled that their mom, Lily Chen, was in town from Shanghai for the show. Wolfgang’s GM Bill Nickerson got a kick watching the models eagerly devour Wolfgang’s burgers and fries after the show. "It’s nice seeing beautiful, skinny models eat like normal people," Nickerson said. UNFORTUNATELY, Honolulu-born Melissa Rapp, one of the songwriters on Bravo’s weekly songwriting competition show "Platinum Hit," was eliminated Monday. Contestants perform songs they have written on the show. Melissa is a Punahou and Stanford grad. … Robert Akinaka was recently recognized by the Punahou Alumni Association with its "O" in Life award. Akinaka is chairman of Akinaka & Associates, a civil engineering consulting firm. The "O" in Life honors alumni who exemplify the ideals of service to Punahou and Hawaii’s community. …
THE THEME for Manoa Valley Theatre’s Aug. 7 Manoa Marquee fundraiser at the Pacific Club is "An Evening of Superheroes." Honorees are three sets of MVT superheroes: Gov. Neil Abercrombie and his wife, Nancie Caraway; the law firm of Cades Schutte; and Alice and Jerry Tucker. Each has demonstrated valuable support to the playhouse throughout its 43-year history. The event, from 5 to 9 p.m., includes entertainment, dinner and a silent auction, emceed by Kirk Matthews and Linda Coble. Attire is "Superhero" (that should be fun) or evening aloha. Tickets start at $250 and are available by calling 988-6131. Event co-chairs are Donna Bebber, Nancy Evans Tudor and Lee Yonaoshi. … "Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding," the 22-year off-Broadway improvisational comedy, is playing at MVT through July 17. … "Hairspray" opens July 15 at Diamond Head Theatre. …
TWO EMPLOYEES of the Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort & Spa, fountain dispenser Nancy Gorospe and food and beverage director Brian Hunnings, were honored by the American Hotel & Lodging Association at its annual Stars of the Industry program June 15 in Atlanta. Gorospe was selected outstanding lodging employee of the year and Hunnings was named manager of the year, both in the large property category of 301 rooms or more. It’s the first time two people from the same property were selected for the national titles. The program receives more than 200 nominations annually. …
