A moped rider was killed and another seriously injured today in a collision with a car on Kalanianaole Highway near Sea Life Park.

According to police, a Nissan sedan driven by a 29-year-old man was traveling toward Kailua when it crossed the center lane and collided head-on with a moped driven by a 23-year-old man. The rider was then struck by another moped, driven by a 28-year-old man, that was traveling directly behind.

The 23-year-old rider was taken in critical condition to Castle Medical Center, where he later died. The second moped rider was also taken to Castle and remained in serious condition.

The driver of the car and his 2-year-old male passenger were not injured.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash. It has not yet been determined if speed was a factor.

This was the 27th motor vehicle fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 30 at the same time last year.
