Officials post shark warning signs at Makaha Beach

Officials posted warning signs at Makaha Beach today after an 8-foot shark was spotted.

At about 1:40 p.m. a shark, described as possibly a tiger shark, swam to the shoreline and right back out to sea. Lifeguards cleared children and participants in the city’s Junior Lifeguard Program out of the water, said Makena Hart, lifeguard and dispatcher for the city Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division.

Makaha is one of four sites program Junior Lifeguard participants train at.

There was no further sighting of the shark, and lifeguards said the signs would be removed at the end of the day.
