The Army has awarded a $35.3 million contract to a Washington state company to design and build enlisted soldier housing at Schofield Barracks on Oahu.

The Honolulu District Office of the Army Corps of Engineers said Thursday it selected Absher Construction Co. of Puyallup, Wash. for the project after receiving three bids.

The facility for unmarried enlisted soldiers is due to house 228 people.

The Corps of Engineers says Absher anticipates portions of the project will be subcontracted to firms on Oahu and provide jobs to local workers.
