The state has fined a Waikiki hotel $50,000 for not notifying the health department that an underground storage tank was installed.

The Hawaii State Department of Health announced Friday a violation notice has been issued to Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki for not reporting that the 4,000 gallon tank was installed in 1990.

New underground storage tanks must be reported to the health department within 30 days of installation.

The health department regulates underground storage tanks which store petroleum or hazardous substances.

Officials noticed the tank listed in records reviewed in September.

An investigation revealed the tank was never reported to the health department.
