Low-flying Coast Guard helicopter prompts complaints

The Coast Guard’s HH-65 Dolphin helicopter is being used in a joint operation with the Honolulu Police Department today.

Neither Police Department or the Coast Guard would say what type of the operation was taking place or how long it would last.

The Coast Guard helicopter flew as low as 300 feet at times over Waikiki and Kaimuki this morning prompted numerous calls of complaint to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Anthony Soto, Coast Guard spokesman, would only say that the aircraft was taking part in “an ongoing operation” and declined to release any other details, including how long the flights would continue.

A caller to the Star-Advertiser said the helicopter was flying as close as 300 feet off the ground beginning about 9 a.m. and was flying over land in a loop that included Waikiki, Diamond Head, Kapahulu and parts of Kaimuki.

The FAA flight standards district office at the Honolulu Airport said it got “numerous calls” and were told by the Coast Guard only that the helicopter was conducting some sort of operation.
