Federal grant to help poor vets find Oahu housing

A $610,000 federal grant is being awarded to help about 125 low-income veterans and their families find stable housing on Oahu.

U.S. Sens. Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye announced Tuesday the grant will go to Catholic Charities Hawaii.

Catholic Charities will use the grant to provide support services to veteran families living in or transitioning to permanent housing.

Akaka says the grant will help deter high rates of homelessness among veterans who risked their lives to protect the country.

Inouye says the nation must provide veterans with care and services they need to get back on their feet.

The grant is part of the Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program in the Department of Veterans Affairs.
