American Samoans grieving military loss get help

A national nonprofit organization is holding a seminar in American Samoa this week to help people cope with the death of friends and family in the military.

The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors — or TAPS — is scheduled to hold the seminar in Pago Pago on Friday and Saturday. The session will offer peer-support and teach coping skills to help people deal with the death of loved ones in the military.

TAPS has helped more than 30,000 people since its founding in 1994.

It offers emotional support, grief and trauma services, seminars for adults and camps for children. It also operates an information helpline for people affected by the death of someone in the military.

Services are free.
