Gov. Neil Abercrombie is due to announce an initiative on broadband Internet access.

The governor is scheduled to hold a media event for the plan at the University of Hawaii at Manoa today.

He’ll be joined by Richard Lim, the director of the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, as well as representatives from Oceanic Time Warner Cable, Hawaiian Telcom and other companies.

The governor’s office says Abercrombie has made it a priority for Hawaii citizens to have access to “ultra high-speed” broadband capabilities at affordable prices.

A report by the Communications Workers of America last year says Hawaii ranks 31st in the nation in Internet speeds. The report says 55 percent of Hawaii residents live in areas with slow Internet speeds.
