Honolulu police say a 50-year-old man who was run over by a van near the Honolulu Airport may have been hit by another vehicle that fled the scene.

Police say the victim was lying on North Nimitz Highway near Ohohia Street at about 2:05 a.m. when a silver 2005 van driven by a 57-year-old man struck him in the middle lane of the highway in the Ewa-bound direction.

Police are trying to figure out if the man was the victim of a hit-and-run accident prior to being struck by the van.

Today’s traffic death was the 36th on Oahu roads, compared to 38 at the same time last year.

Police closed the Ewa-bound lanes of the highway while they investigated the crash and routed traffic around the area via Peltier Avenue. They reopened the highway at about 5:30 a.m.
