Primary objective: Establish new go-to targets at slot receiver and tight end. Those positions combined for 47 percent of UCD’s 209 completions last season.
At the controls: Under co-offensive coordinator Mike Moroski, passing accounted for 74 percent of the Aggies’ yardage last season.
Leading the charge: QB Randy Wright earned the starting job as a redshirt freshman and threw for 2,432 yards and 17 touchdowns against eight interceptions.
Key to success: Wright’s continued development in the system behind an offensive line that started three sophomores and a junior last season.
DEFENSE
Returning starters: Eight
Primary objective: Keep the Aggies on the plus side in turnover margin after gaining 15 fumbles and nine interceptions last season.
At the controls: Mark Johnson returned to UC Davis in 2009 after serving as defensive coordinator at Utah State. Also coached at Boise State and Nevada.
Leading the charge: Linebacker Jordan Glass, a transfer from Utah State, ranked third on the team with 66 total tackles, 41⁄2 for losses.
Key to success: Outside linebacker Byron Gruendl building on a season with seven tackles for loss and three sacks, most among the Aggies’ returnees.
