LOS ANGELES >> A University of Southern California student was shot in the chest at a weekend party near the Los Angeles school and remains in guarded condition.

Police spokesman Bill Smith says the student, whose name is not being released, was at a party when a fight erupted and he was shot Sunday morning shortly after 2 a.m. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery.

Another woman reported hand injury, which was not considered serious.

Authorities have not yet arrested a suspect.
