Big Island man dies after crash of his pickup truck

[ AD HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THIS STORY ]

Speed and alcohol were apparent factors in a single-vehicle crash that killed a 33-year-old Mountain View man over the weekend, Big Island police said.

John Alvarez lost control of his 1988 Nissan pickup truck on Ohia Avenue in Mountain View and struck a tree on the left side of the road about 4:25 a.m. Saturday, Big Island police said.

Alvarez, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the truck. He died at 7:50 that morning at Hilo Medical Center. An autopsy has been scheduled.

The crash happened on a private road and will not be counted toward the county’s official traffic fatality count, police said.
