Motorcyclist killed on Maui after running red light, hitting truck

A 32-year-old man died late Monday when he ran a red light and crashed his motorcycle into a truck in Kahului, Maui police said today.

The motorcyclist was traveling north on Mokulele Highway and struck an "industrial truck" traveling east on Cane Haul Road at the intersection, police said. The motorcycle caught fire after the crash.

The truck driver was not injured and the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.

The Mokulele Highway traffic had the red light, according to police.

The motorcyclist’s identification was not released pending notification of next of kin.

The death was the 15th traffic fatality in 2011 on Maui compared with 10 at the same time last year, according to police. It was also the sixth fatal motorcycle accident this year on Maui, they said.
