Mother thwarts kidnapping attempt of her children

Police are looking for a man who is believed to have kidnapped two young children as they were walking home from Honowai Elementary School in Waipahu Monday afternoon.

The mother of the two children — a 7-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy — told police that she saw the youngsters get into suspect’s car at 2 p.m. Police said the suspect told the children he was a friend of their mother and was there to pick them up.

The mother blocked the suspect’s car with her car and confronted the man, whom she did not know. The two children got out of the suspect’s car while the suspect and the mother exchanged words.

The suspect, described as 30 to 40 years old, reversed his car, drove away and has not been identified, police said.

The children were not injured.

The car is described as a 2003, dark-colored Volkswagen Passat.
