Flat tire in Waipio results in auto theft arrests

Two men were arrested Tuesday after the stolen car they were in got a flat tire as the driver fled from officers in Waipio, police said.

The staff at Jack in the Box called police about 11:30 p.m. after two men in a car were seen casing the area near Lumiauau and Lumiaina streets. Responding officers tried to stop the car, but the driver fled into the Crestview residential area, eventually stopping at Waipio Uka Street and Manawa Place after the car’s right front tire hit a pothole and blew. The driver ran into a home, but was eventually arrested, and the second man stayed in the car, police said. Officers later found the car was reported stolen and had stolen license plates.

The driver, a 40-year-old Kalihi man, was booked for investigation of auto theft, refusing to stop, reckless driving, theft, and resisting arrest.

As officers searched the second man, they allegedly found a glass pipe with white residue and a small plastic bag with marijuana. He was arrested on suspicion of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and several drug offenses.
