ASU pulled offer to June Jones with no explanation, agent says
An offer to June Jones to coach Arizona State has been pulled.
Jones’ agent Leigh Steinberg said on his Twitter feed Wednesday that everything was set, with only few tweaks left, and the principal decision-maker pulled the deal with no real explanation. He called it "… one of the most bizarre endings to a set of productive discussions to bring a client to a new situation."
Arizona State had no comment, but Chief Operating Officer Steve Patterson told Houston TV station KRIV that Jones would not be the Sun Devils’ coach and that the process continues.
SMU President R. Gerald Turner told The Dallas Morning News that Jones will remain as the Mustangs’ coach for 2012.
Earlier, several news organizations reported that the former University of Hawaii football coach, who now coaches Southern Methodist University, would become the next head coach at ASU.
Arizona Sports 620, CBS Sports, Fox Sports Arizona and ESPN.com, quoting a source, say ASU’s hiring of Jones will be announced later this week.

But ESPN Dallas/Fort Worth reported ASU’s explanation that "it took too long" and the school president was moving on.
One source said negative reaction from fans and boosters to Jones’ impending selection prompted the deal being pulled.
The news comes as UH coach Greg McMackin, who was hired after Jones left for SMU in 2007, announced his retirement Tuesday after a disappointing 6-7 season.
Jones had a 76-41 record at Hawaii. He hasa 23-28 record at SMU. However, that includes a 1-11 record his first year. In the past three seasons, the Mustangs compiled a 22-17 record and went to three bowl games in four seasons.
Jones earns $2 million a year at SMU.
SMU will join the Big East conference in 2013.
Arizona State fired coach Dennis Erickson last week after five years.
