3 hikers airlifted from mountains behind Crouching Lion

Firefighters rescued three men Thursday after they got lost on a hike back from the rock formation known as Crouching Lion in Kaaawa.

The men in their 20s took a wrong turn on Puu Manamana Trail and ended up two valleys over in Kualoa, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig. The men realized they were lost when they noticed they were heading away from the ocean and called for help about 2:55 p.m.

A fire rescue specialist, hanging from a helicopter by rope, moved each man to an area where they could be picked up by the helicopter. Firefighters picked up the men by helicopter and flew them to a landing zone in Kualoa Valley over several trips, Seelig said. No one was hurt.
