The city is reminding Oahu residents that refuse collection workers will not be working on the next two Mondays — Dec. 26 and Jan. 2 — to observe the Christmas and New Year holidays.

People whose household trash is normally picked up Monday should leave their gray cart curbside and it will be picked up a day or two after the holiday, the city said.

People whose green waste and mixed recyclables (green and blue carts) are normally picked up on Monday should hold those items until the next respective pickup date after Jan. 2.

People who are on twice-weekly manual refuse pickup should hold those items until the next scheduled pickup following the Dec. 26 and Jan. 2 non-collection days.

Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are the only two holidays observed by city refuse workers, who work Monday through Saturday.

City refuse convenience centers, transfer stations, H-Power and Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill will be closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, but will be open Dec. 26 and Jan. 2.

People can recycle Christmas trees by removing all ornaments, tinsel and flocking and cutting them up so fit in their green waste cart with the lid closed. Residents on a manual collection route should cut their tree into three-foot lengths, bundle it and set it out with the trash. Condominium residents and others may drop off trees at a city refuse convenience center.
