Honolulu police officers stand at attention for a final call during memorial services for Honolulu police officer Garret C. Davis on Tuesday at Borthwick Mortuary in downtown Honolulu.
Hundreds of law enforcement officers gathered at Borthwick Mortuary today to pay respects to officer Garret Davis, whom colleagues, friends and family described as living his dream when he became a Honolulu police officer just more than three years ago.
Davis, 28, had pulled over along a narrow shoulder of H-1 freeway in Aiea to assist stranded motorists on the night of Jan. 21 when his patrol car was struck by a pickup truck. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene.
Amanda Stevens, Davis’ sister, said her brother always had a cheerful disposition but was serious about two things — police work and his now 3-year-old daughter, MacKenzie Rose.
"He tried calling her and seeing her every chance he could," Stevens said."It was so important to Garret that Mackenzie Rose knew who her father was."
Davis was the second Honolulu officer killed while on duty along Oahu highways in the last four months. Eric Fontes was killed while helping with a traffic stop along Farrington Highway in Ko Olina on Sept. 13.
Police said if Davis had not stopped, the two people in the vehicle would have died instead.
HPD is scheduled to hold a final salute ceremony in front of the South Beretania Street headquarters at about 1 p.m. Wednesday.
