For the first time since last week, thunderstorms are not in the forecast for the state, at least for today.

A weather system that soaked Kauai, Oahu and Maui and brought thunder, lightning and even hail has weakened. But another system may move in Friday and Saturday, creating unsettled conditions and more rain.

Forecasters say snow may fall today on Hawaii island summits where a winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 p.m.  A high surf warning is in effect for east shores of Kauai, Oahu, Maui and Hawaii island, where surf of 10 to15 feet is expected. A high surf advisory is also in effect for north facing shores of Oahu, Kauai, Niihau, Molokai and Maui.  

Forecasters lifted a flash flood watch for Oahu, Kauai and Maui counties as the islands begin to dry out and clean up after Tuesday’s storms.

Unlike Tuesday, today’s forecast calls for partly sunny skies and breezy tradewinds. Windward and mauka areas can expect the usual morning showers. Hawaii island may see some showers from the weakening weather system in addition to snow at the summits. A wind advisory is also in effect for Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala on Maui.

The chance of thunderstorms returns on Friday when a new weather system moves in and the rainy conditions could last through the weekend.
