Garden Island residents who experienced it probably don’t need statistics to tell them that record-breaking rainfall fell on Kauai over the last week. 

The National Weather Service compiled rainfall totals for the seven-day period from Friday March 2 through Friday, March 9. And while the week-long totals haven’t been compared to other rainy weeks, daily records were set at Lihue Airport on three dates.

The seven-day totals show Hanalei got the most rain — nearly 46-inches. Kapahi, above Kapaa, recorded nearly 32.7 inches. Both areas saw more rain than Mt. Waialeale, which got 31.3 inches.

Most rain fell on the north and east sides of the island. The Wailua Ditch got 28.2 inches; Kilohana recorded 26.9 inches; Anahola got 20.5 inches and one Lihue Gage saw 20.5 inches.

Rainfall at the Lihue Airport set a record Friday of 3.63 inches, beating the old record for March 9 of 3.46 inches set in 1950. Monday’s rainfall of 8.64 inches washed away the old record of 1.14 inches for March set in 1974.  On Sunday, 3.3 inches fell, breaking the old record for March 4 of 2.7 inches set last year.

Kahului Airport on Maui also set a record on Thursday of 1.14 inches, beating the old record of .99 inches in 1991. 

Oahu’s seven-day rain totals were also impressive. The Oahu Forest National Wildlife Refuge in the northern Koolaus recorded 39.7 inches. The Moanalua USGS Gage saw 36.4 inches and Punaluu Stream got nearly 31.5 inches.

The Wilson Tunnel gage recorded 25 inches; Ahuimanu got nearly 18.6 inches; and Niu Valley saw 13.1 inches.

The driest spot on Oahu this past week was the Waianae Boat Harbor, which only recorded .93 inches.

On Molokai, Makapulapai saw 5.4 inches, while 2.7 inches fell at the airport.

Puu Kukui in the West Maui Forest Reserve got 16.7 inches, Haiku saw 4.2 inches  and the Kahului Airport recorded 2.3 inches. Data for east Maui, which was hardest hit by the rains, was not available.
