UH softball team edges past Winthrop 2-1
Jessica Iwata’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the University of Hawaii softball team to a 2-1 win over Winthrop today in the final game of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament.
No. 18/19 UH (24-2) took the lead in the bottom of the first inning on a leadoff home run by Kelly Majam. The blast to right-center was the 44th home run of Majam’s UH career, moving her into a tie with Kate Robinson for the program’s all-time record.
Winthrop (11-16) scored on a sacrifice fly in the third inning and the teams went into the seventh still tied.
Winthrop walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning and Iwata’s line out to center field was deep enough to score Dara Pagaduan from third with the winning run.
UH pitcher Stephanie Ricketts earned the complete-game win to improve to 14-2. She gave up six hits, struck out eight and walked one.
UH closed the tournament at 3-2. No. 1/2 California was awarded the tournament title after finishing at 4-1 along with Texas A&M and Texas. The Golden Bears won the tiebreaker of fewest runs allowed in the tournament with seven.
