UH receives grant for new center on ocean science research

Hawaii is the new home of a center that will help research scientists, educators and community groups work together on ocean science and conservation.

The National Science Foundation has awarded the University of Hawaii a three-year grant for $875,000 to establish a member of the Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence Network.

Hawaii’s center is called Island Earth and is the 14th and newest member of a national network of centers.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa’s School of Ocean Engineering, Science and Technology is leading the new center, which will also involve the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, Maui College, Sea Grant, and College of Education.

The university said Monday the center plans to have interdisciplinary fellowships and symposia that bridge science research, cultural practices, and ocean-related policies.
