Police closed the intersection of Isenberg and Date streets as Traffic Division officers investigated a hit-and-run accident that sent a 38-year-old man to the hospital with critical head injuries Wednesday night.

A driver who critically injured a mo-ped rider in McCully fled the scene and is being sought by police.

The hit-and-run accident happened at the intersection of Isenberg and Date streets at about 9:32 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said a silver Nissan, headed makai on Isenberg Street at "a high rate of speed," made a left turn into the mo-ped, which was headed mauka on Isenberg Street.

The 38-year-old man driving the mo-ped suffered "critical, massive head injuries," police said. Paramedics took him to the Queen’s Medical Center.

Police believe speed may be a factor in the crash, which happened under an overhead street light.

The mo-ped rider was not wearing a helmet.

Police closed Isenberg, Date and Citron streets in the area until about 12:42 a.m. while Traffic Division officers investigated the crash scene.
