Coast Guard airlifts ailing cruise passenger to Kona

U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crews plucked an ailing woman from a cruise ship off Hawaii island so she could be transported to a hospital.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Anthony Soto says a helicopter delivered oxygen to the 35-year-old woman from Poland suffering from pneumonia. Another helicopter transported her to an airfield where a waiting ambulance took her to Kona Community Hospital.

Soto says staff from The World Residences at Sea told the Coast Guard the vessel was running out of oxygen for the woman. The ship was originally headed to Honolulu but will now go to the Big Island.

The ship’s last port of call was Fanning Island in the Republic of Kiribati.
