Fire crews from Oanu and Maui are joining Kauai firefighters, federal firefighters and state Land Department personnel battling a wildfire which has consumed at least 200 acres in the Na Pali-Kona Forest Reserve on Milolii Ridge since Monday.

The fire is burning six miles southwest of Kokee State Park in molasses grass and slash pine.

No structures are threatened, but there is concern that the fire could spread in the Kuia Natural Area Reserve, home to threatened and endangered plants, including Kokia Kauaiensis, a native hibiscus.

Steep terrain and limited ground access have hampered firefighting efforts. 

Three helicopters are dropping water on the fire in areas that are difficult to reach on foot.

The state has also closed the Milolii Ridge Trail until the fire is extinguished.

It’s believed the fire may have started from an unauthorized camping fire.

On Thursday, Division of Forestry and Wildlife personnel constructed a fire line and extinguished hot spots with hand tools, with support from a Kauai Fire Department crew.

Two state wildfire trucks with mobile water pump units and a Kauai County Public Works water tender are providing water for the helicopters.

A hand crew from the Pacific Missile Range Facility established a perimeter around  one of their facilities in the area.

No injuries have been reported.
