Brushfires in Maili and Kunia keep crews busy

Firefighters were working on preventing a Maili brush fire from closing in on a nearby residential area around Oheohe Street and Kaukama Road, Honolulu Fire Department officials said Sunday.

Officials said they are unsure of the exact size of the fire but that it covers a wide area.

The call came in at 2:28 p.m., and so far a total of six engines and a helicopter have responded to the fire, a department spokesman said.

Earlier today, a more rural brush fire started near Kunia Road across the street from the Hawaii Country Club and traveled toward the mountain, covering about five acres of land, the department said.

That call came in at 11:56 p.m., and the fire was contained around 2 p.m. A small storage shed was set ablaze, but no other damage was reported.
