Maui couple released after murder hearing is continued

A 32-year-old man and his 27-year-old girlfriend charged in the murder of his 4-year-old son, Zion McKeown, were released Tuesday.

A Maui judge released Kyle O. McKeown and Grace Lee-Nakamoto, both charged with second degree murder, on their own recognizance after Maui Deputy Prosecutor Robert Rivera asked for a continuance of the pair’s scheduled preliminary hearing.

Wailuku District Judge Mimi DesJardins said court rules require that defendants be released on their own recognizance in the event of a continuance in a preliminary hearing, according to court minutes on the state Judiciary’s Hoohiki, the online court information.

The preliminary hearing was continued to 3:30 p.m. July 2.

The judge ordered that the defendants have no contact with any minors; make no contact with each other; and surrender passports.

Zion McKeown died from blunt force trauma to his lower abdomen, and his injuries most likely came from being stomped on while he was lying on the ground, autopsy and court documents said.

The two had been held in lieu of $500,000 bail at the Maui Community Correctional Center.
