Hiker in fatal Kauai fall died of head injuries, autopsy finds
Kauai police released preliminary autopsy results for a 30-year-old Kapaa woman who died in a fall while hiking in Kalalau.
Results indicate Rose Schlegel died from head trauma after she fell from a cliff near a campsite in Kalalau Valley Tuesday night. Police had said Schlegel fell about 20 feet and landed on rocks below the cliff.
Nearby campers tried to revive her, without success. A camper used his radio to call the Coast Guard, which notified the Kauai Fire Department. A fire rescue helicopter recovered Schlegel’s body the next day.
