Police officer hurt in collision with truck at Beretania and Ward

A police officer was injured in a collision with a pickup truck that witnesses said ran a red light at the intersection of Beretania Street and Ward Avenue about 5:30 a.m. today.

A Honolulu police officer was treated and released at the Queen’s Medical Center this morning after the patrol car she was driving was hit in an intersection near the Beretania Street main police station.

Witnesses told police that a man driving a pickup truck ran a red light at Beretania Street and Ward Avenue and hit the marked patrol car.

The police car was traveling west on Beretania Street when the collision happened just before 5:30 a.m.

The truck, a silver Nissan Frontier crew cab pickup, was traveling mauka on Ward when the 21-year-old male driver allegedly ran a red light. Police were also investigating if the man was driving while impaired.

The officer was taken to the hospital for observation and released, police said.
