Hawaii County, federal crews continue to battle brushfires in Pahala

Hawaii County and National Park Service firefighters continued to douse hot spots within the perimeters of two Pahala brush fires in the Kau District.

The firefighters have managed to maintain the firebreaks, keeping the fires from spreading more than its roughly 5,300 acres.

Both fires began Monday. Hawaii Fire Department employed 13 firefighters Saturday, while three park service personnel worked on the northern flank of the makai fire.

The 400-acre mauka fire above Pahala town remains 95 percent contained.

The 4,900-acre makai fire remains at 60 percent contained. Efforts are concentrated at its northern and southern flanks, fire officials said.
