This Week In Review: Lanai sale, Ala Moana Center, Sandusky

» Billionaire Larry Ellison, founder and CEO of software giant Oracle Corp., reached an agreement to buy Lanai from David Murdock, owner of Lanai and Castle & Cooke Inc. Castle & Cooke said the sale will not affect plans to build a controversial wind energy project and send the power to Oahu via undersea cable.

» Wind-driven brush fires on Hawaii island and Maui that began Monday scorched thousands of acres and caused property damage. A weeklong fire burned more than 5,200 acres in Pahala, destroying trees on some coffee farms and prompting officials to evacuate Kau Hospital. On Maui, fire burned a total of 12 acres in the Kula and Makawao forest reserves and damaged three homes in Kula.

» District Judge Fay Koyanagi increased bail to $200,000 for David Lee Becker, former manager of a closed Waimanalo puppy mill, because Becker left the state in May 2011 before he could be served with 153 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty.

» The owner of Ala Moana Center, General Growth Properties, plans to redevelop the site that Sears will vacate in 2014 into nearly 700,000 square feet of new stores and restaurants, doubling the retail space there.

» Mesa Air Group shed the go!Mokulele name of its Hawaii airline, returning to the carrier’s original name of go! A separate Mokulele Airlines will continue to serve Hawaii’s smaller markets.

» The state Board of Education narrowed the budget shortfall for school bus service Tuesday to $5.5 million, less than the original $17 million funding gap for the 2012-13 school year. It was not known how many students would lose bus service.

» Circuit Judge Dexter Del Rosario sentenced Kilani Derego, 19, on Wednesday to life in prison with the possibility of parole for the 2010 beating death of taxi driver Charlys Ty Tang.

» Lower oil prices dropped the average price of gasoline to $4.35 a gallon statewide, compared with $4.54 a month ago, AAA reported Friday.

» Former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, 68, was convicted Friday of sexually assaulting 10 boys over 15 years, a swift and emphatic end to a case that shattered Penn State University’s Happy Valley image and brought down Hall of Fame football coach Joe Paterno.

» Rodney King, whose beating by Los Angeles police helped spark the 1992 Los Angeles riots, died last Sunday at 47. He was eventually awarded a $3.8 million settlement, but continued to lead a troubled life.

» For the first time, the influx of Asians moving to the United States has surpassed that of Hispanics, reflecting a slowdown in illegal immigration while American employers increase their demand for high-skilled workers, according to a study released last week by the Pew Research Center.

» New York school bus monitor Karen Klein, who was cruelly taunted by four boys on the bus, received hundreds of thousands in donations last week when a video of the incident went viral.

» Greek voters gave a narrow victory in parliamentary elections last Sunday to a party that had supported a bailout for the country’s failed economy. Antonis Samaras will lead the three-party governing coalition.

» With a rambling monologue depicting Norway’s worst peacetime massacre as a necessary evil, confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik got the last word as his 10-week trial ended Friday amid conflicting claims about his sanity.
