Plumbing work on a townhouse in Hawaii Kai is believed to be the cause of a minor fire Tuesday night.

Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said firefighters were called at 7:50 a.m. to a townhouse unit on Lunalilo Home Road after a homeowner reported that his bathroom wall felt warm.

Firefighters opened the bathroom wall and found evidence of charring probably from a fire that may have started after a plumber completed work on copper pipes earlier in the day. There also was water damage since a water pipe was broken while firefighters were trying to trace the source of the heat.

Damage was estimated at $5,000.

The Red Cross met with the homeowner, who didn’t need emergency assistance.
