U.S. to pay family $900,000 for fatal crash with military vehicle
The federal government has agreed to pay $900,000 to the children of a woman who died in a head-on collision with a seven-ton military troop transport vehicle on Kamehameha Highway in Hauula.
Vicki Lynn Norman, 57, died Oct. 23, 2008, when the troop transport vehicle, driven by a 19-year-old Kaneohe Marine, crossed the center line and crashed into her minivan. She was activity coordinator at the Ponds at Punaluu retirement community.
Witnesses reported seeing the driver of the troop transport having difficulty, especially around curves, and said he would cross the center line into the opposite lane of traffic or drive on the shoulder of the roadway.
The driver, Eric Wycklendt, pleaded no contest in May 2010 to misdemeanor negligent homicide. He is no longer in the Marine Corps. He received a 30-day jail term.
