Motorcycle-pickup collision kills 2 on South Kona highway

Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in a crash involving a motorcyclist and a pickup that killed both drivers Friday night in South Kona, Hawaii Island police said today.

Police identified the motorcyclist as Toby H. Ledward, 40, of Kona, and the pickup driver as Glennard A. Sadumiano, 33, of Kealakekua.

Police said Sadumiano was heading south on Route 11 in a 2005 Chevrolet pickup and making a left turn onto Kalamalani Place at 9:13 p.m. when Ledward came from behind on a 1994 Honda motorcycle, crossed the centerline, and collided with Sadumiano’s pickup.

Firefighters said Ledward was found with no signs of life in the middle of the highway and Sadumiano was trapped in his truck about 50 feet off the highway.

Police said firefighters took Sadumiano to Kona Community Hospital where he died at 9:38 p.m. Ledward was pronounced dead at the hospital at 11:40 p.m.

Police believe Ledward was speeding and that alcohol may have been involved.

Autopsies have been requested.

Police said Ledward was not wearing a helmet and Sadumiano was not wearing a seat belt.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call officer Joshua Lewis at 326-4646, extension 229.

The crash pushed Hawaii Island’s traffic fatalities to 18 this year compared to 12 at this time last year.
