A mo-ped sits at Keeaumoku Street at Young after a crash that critically the driver injured driver.

A man was in critical condition Wednesday night after his mo-ped collided with a second mo-ped whose rider then fled on Keeaumoku Street, police said.

Police were looking for the second mo-ped driver who was described as a man in his 30s or 40s on a white mo-ped.

Honolulu police Lt. Robert Towne said witnesses told investigators that the two men were riding abreast in the makai-bound, far right lane just before King Street when the victim wobbled and struck the other mo-ped before crashing at about 7 p.m.

The victim, a 52-year-old Kaneohe man, wasn’t wearing a helmet and went to the hospital in critical condition with head injuries, Towne said.

The second driver briefly stopped at the King Street intersection and looked back before fleeing down Keeaumoku. Police opened a failure to render aid case.

It’s not known if speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call the Traffic Division at 529-3499.

Police closed the makai-bound lanes of Keeaumoku between Young and King streets to investigate the crash. They reopened just after 9 p.m.
