2 tourists survive 100-foot fall off Maui cliff in car

Two tourists survived, and one hiked out to get help, after their car went over a 100-foot cliff on Maui early this morning.

A Maui Fire Department spokesman said the car drove off Kahekili Highway near the 10-mile marker at about 2:30 a.m.

One of the men hiked up the cliff and got to the highway about an hour later. A local resident found him by the side of the road at about 5:30 a.m. and located the area where the car went over the cliff.

The Fire Department helicopter, paramedics and fire rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene and set up a landing zone in a pasture near the cliff.

The helicopter airlifted the man who stayed behind to the pasture and an ambulance took both men to the hospital.

The man who hiked out was in his 20s from Belton, S.C. The other man was in his 30s from Lafayette, Calif., a Fire Department spokesman said. Both men suffered bruises and scratches, but both were walking and talking.
