Kauai police cited a driver for towing a boat on Kaumualii Highway without a permit Tuesday morning.

Kauai police cited the driver of a truck that was towing an oversized boat without a permit on Kaumualii Highway in Waimea about 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The truck hauling the commercial tour boat was traveling east near the Makeke Road junction when officers made a traffic stop, a county news release said.

The boat, more than 30 feet long, was being towed on a trailer.

The vehicle’s operator was cited for allegedly being in violation of a number of state and county traffic codes, including hauling an oversized load without a permit from the state Department of Transportation.

Police instructed the driver to park the boat and trailer until a proper permit could be obtained. The highway was closed for about 10 minutes to allow the driver time to move the boat and trailer from the roadway.

Police cited the driver for eight violations. Five of the violations contain fines totalling $537. Penalties for the other three violations, all of which deal with oversize loads, will be determined in court.
