Hawaii island police identify 55-year-old man killed on one-car crash
Hawaii island police have identified the Kealakekua man killed in a one-car crash Saturday on Highway 11 as 55-year-old Bryan T. Hanato.
Police said today that Hanato was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi two-door sedan north on Route 11 in South Kona at about 1:30 p.m. when he lost control of the car, ran off the right side of the road and overturned. He was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.
He was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital at 4:17 p.m. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
Police said it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved but speed was a factor.
Anyone with information about the crash can call Officer Larry Flowers at 326-4646, extension 229.
It was the 33rd traffic fatality on Hawaii island this year compared with 16 at this time last year, police said.
