Mililani and Farrington were taking turns lighting up the Aloha Stadium scoreboard when the lights actually went out in Halawa.

A power outage in the third quarter of Friday’s OIA Red semifinal game led to a 28-minute delay. When the lights came back on Mililani quarterback Jarin Morikawa recharged the Trojans as they pulled away for a 42-21 victory over the Governors to earn a spot in the conference title game and the Division I state tournament.

“Never been in that situation before so it was kind of freaky,” said Morikawa, who threw two of his five touchdown passes after the blackout.

“The power outage slowed us down a little bit, but once we stared rolling again we were able to get things going again.”

While Mililani (9-1) advanced to the title game, Farrington (8-2) will play in the third-place game for the league’s final state tournament berth.

Morikawa completed 22 of 35 passes for 357 yards to counter a lights-out performance by Farrington running back Tyler Taumua, who rushed for 226 yards on 29 carries and two touchdowns.

“Hat’s off to Farrington, well coached, very physical,” Mililani head coach Rod York said. “People were right, we hadn’t seen a running attack like how they bring it, but then again … it’s a real testament to the kids, they picked it up.”
