Hawaii County police arrested a 28-year-old Keaukaha man Thursday for allegedly burglarizing a Keaukaha home during the tsunami evacuation Oct. 27.

Police arrested the man on suspicion of burglary of a dwelling during a civil defense emergency, which is a Class A felony. He is being held pending further investigation.

Eight Keaukaha homes on Kalanianaole Avenue were burglarized while residents were told to leave because of the tsunami threat, police said.

Residents reported the items stolen ranged from women’s underwear and swimsuits, to chain saws and weed whackers.

Police said small items, including jewelry and cash, were also taken.

Anyone with information on these burglaries is asked to call Sgt. James Correa at (808) 961-2289 or the police non-emergency line at (808) 935-3311.

Anonymous calls may be made to Crimestoppers at (808) 961-8300 in Hilo or (808) 329-8181 in Kona.
