UH men’s basketball team routs Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Rainbow Classic

Four players scored in double figures to lead the Hawaii men’s basketball team to an 81-54 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Warriors (2-0) enter tomorrow night’s 11 p.m. contest against Houston Baptist (2-0) with the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic title on the line. The game is televised on ESPN for the College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon.

UH shot 49.1 percent overall and 45.8 percent (11-for-24) on 3-pointers. The ‘Bows posted a 27-7 run bridging the halves to seize control and never looked back.

UAPB (0-2) was held to 18.4 percent shooting in the second half and 26.2 percent for the game.

UH got the job done behind its three senior tri-captains. Swingman Hauns Brereton had 15 points and nine rebounds, center Vander Joaquim had 15 points off the bench, and point guard Jace Tavita had eight points, 10 assists and five boards. Brandon Spearman added 12 points and Christian Standhardinger 11.

The Lions led 27-25 on a three-point play by Mitchell Anderson, but UH closed the half on an 8-0 run to lead 33-27 at the break.

Guard Lazabian Jackson led UAPB with 12 points.
