The Search for Signs of Hawaiian Life: Oatman, Ariz.

COURTESY CONRAD NEGRONE
Debbie Negrone of Kaneohe came across a sign advertising Hawaiian shaved ice posted outside the Oatman Hotel during a trip to Arizona last month. The Old West town has gained attention as a tourist stop, aided by the nearby gambling rooms in Laughlin, Nev. Among its unique attractions are wild donkeys that roam undisturbed through Oatman, an enduring reminder of its days as a gold mining town. The animals are descendants of the donkeys released by prospectors who gave up the hunt for fortune.
