Trapasso signs 8 high school seniors for 2014
Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso has received letters of intent from eight recruits for the 2014 season during the early signing period over the last week.
Left-handed pitchers Michael Echavia of Amador Valley (Calif.) High School and Blake Taylor from Dana Hills (Calif.) H.S. join Trapasso’s quintet of local prospects — Waiakea’s Kean Wong, Mid-Pacific’s Marcus Doi, Saint Louis catcher Iolana Akau, Kailua pitcher Bryce Ah Sam and Hilo’s Chayce Kaaua — and Marina (Calif.) High School first baseman Jake Bauers, who committed before his junior year, to make up arguably Trapasso’s best recruiting class yet.
Baseball America singled Hawaii out on Wednesday as one of its seven teams it praised for one of the top early classes.
UH has never had a recruiting class ranked by Baseball America in its 13-year history of doing them.
Doi (ranked No. 49) and Akau (No. 97) were ranked in Baseball America’s top 100 high school prospects rankings while Wong, Taylor and Bauers were listed in the top 150.
All eight prospects are seniors in high school.
