Hawaii’s mortgage payments second-highest in U.S.

Hawaii’s average monthly mortgage payments are second-only to those in Wash., D.C., according to a new ranking by LendingTree, an online source for home loan offers.

The $1,641 paid in Washington, D.C., tops the $1,536 paid in Hawaii, while the average monthly mortgage in California is $1,445. In Hawaii and California, the mortgage averages 30 percent of household income, while D.C. homeowners pay an average of 31 percent.

Homeowners in Iowa, Arkansas and Nebraska have the lowest average monthly mortgage payments, at $717, $715, and $711, respectively, which comprise a respective 17 percent, 22 percent and 17 percent of household incomes, LendingTree found.
